Lamp Cap Types

The electrical connections to each lamp type (the cap) comes in various forms dependant on the lamp type and its application.

Bayonet:

A B22 lamp holder is a socket that holds lamps with this cap. The 'B22' refers to the 22 mm diameter of the base and are usualy refered to as Bayonet Cap (BC) lamp holders. 

A B15 lamp holder is a socket that hold lamps with this smaller bayonet cap. As with the B22, 'B15' refers to the 15mm diameter of this base. This cap is also refered to as The Small Bayonet cap (SBC) and is used on lamps that require a smaller fitting, such as desk and wall lamps.

Edison Screw

E5-The Lilliput Edison Screw base is the smallest Edison screw base, with 5mm thread outer diameter. It is often used in warning lights, panel illumination and xmas lights.

E26-Lamps also refered to as Medium Edison Screw lamps, they are mostly used in America, but can be found in europe.

E10-The Miniture Edison Screw base is the next smallest after the Lilliput (E5) base, lamps made with this base tend to be used in warning lamps, panel illumination and hand-held light sources (torches/flashlights).

E27-The Standard Edison Lamp or ES lamp cap, is used in a large range of lamps for medium power applications.

E11-The Mini Candelabra is 11mm in diameter and are commonly used for small halogen (hot!) lamps.

E11 Base Lamp

E39-The Large Edison cap, used on higher output lamps.

E1-The Candelabra is 12mm in diameter and are used in decorative fittings.

E40-The Giant Edison Lamp, these are used on higher output lamps, for example 500w GLS or HPS.

E14-The Small Edison screw lamp tend to be small decorative type lamps, for example, golf-ball, candle lamps and pigmy types.

E17- The Intermedate Lamp are usualy small types that tend to be used in microwave ovens etc.
