Prehistoric era: Fire was used for lighting in the form of torches and campfires. 

Ur, Mesopotamia: Evidence of oil lamps burning olive and sesame oil dates back more than 4,500 years. 

Kerose/Parafin Lamp

1792: British engineer William Murdoch invented gas lighting using coal. 

1881: Clamond Basket invents the gas mantle. This device was made from a matrix of magnesium oxide. Gas mixed with air which burnt hotter than a bare flame thus heatting the manltle and giving ot mre light than a bre flame.
