As their name intimates, general purpose lamps (GLS), are just that. They are used for day-to-day practical lighting applications, such as in the home, office or factory where a simple light source is required.

The higher wattage lamps are large in size and so too is the luminare; the larger lamps have now been replaced with halogen types and LED units.
GLS lamps come in a range of voltages from 12v to 250v and wattages from 25-500W, higher wattage lamps were available but have no been discontinued and superseded by halogen and other light sources.

This is the first lamp in my collection and is a 500w at 240v lamp, which is a large lamp as can be seen. I have only illuminated this a few times.
